A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

I think there is only one way to go and that is to go to the Commission. We have been treated very well by the Commission. They stand for reconciliation. They want the truth to come out and for the past to be buried. // What is it that you and your team want to tell the Amnesty Committee? // We ...
It is expected that the court will hear evidence on a weapon eventually fished out of the dam. When Barnard’s cocaine habit worsened and he stopped spending money on anything but drugs Amore Badenhorst turned on him. She ranted, shot at him, burned his sauna to keep warm. Nothing would make him ...
On the fifth day of hearings Clive Derby-Lewis was finally taken under cross examination. The Hani family opposes the granting of amnesty and their legal team aim to show that Clive Derby-Lewis had a history of lying to courts. They also implied that he was lying about his wife’s involvement in ...

For us as a team it symbolized committing ourselves to reconciliation, the fact that we’ve come in, the fact that we work with the TRC on a frequent basis, we are also committed to reconciling South Africa as a whole. But what’s the symbol behind it from the TRC’s perspective? // Well for us ...

While proceedings inside the Truth Commission have captured most of the attention, there’s a lot of work being done outside it to compliment and sometimes question the work of Desmond Tutu’s team. Khulumani is one such organisation which has mobilized hundreds of victims in smaller groups in ...
People who must have an opportunity to register their regret at not preventing human rights violations and also to give them an opportunity to register their commitment to reconciliation.
I just remember feeling the most incredible rage and anger that he was ignoring me and that he was lying at the time, because he said ‘kandi shishi, kandi shishi,’ he doesn’t know anything. Then I brought the person that we’d captured the day before. They’d been travelling together and I ...

Who did you receive that instruction from? // As I mentioned in my application at that stage it was the then head of the Defence Force General Geldenhuys, he asked me to draw up this plan. // And that would have been a plan as you indicate in your amnesty application to be of support to the SAP in ...
She introduced me to Jerry Richardson who was in charge of the house. She introduced me to Slash, Shoes and other boys. I didn’t have clothes to wear so she gave me a tracksuit for Mandela United. They wrote on the back Mandela United Football Team.
Well it certainly seems as if the Truth Commission process is gaining momentum. A lot of people who felt that the Truth Commission concentrated too much on the sad stories of victims and was not getting to the real story of our sordid past must be changing their minds. The Inkatha Freedom Party was ...
