Special Report Transcript Episode 18, Section 1, Time 00:21

If anybody had for a moment forgotten why South Africa needed a Commission for truth and reconciliation, four days of stories of harrowing cruelty and human suffering before the Commission’s hearing in Nelspruit this week was a sober reminder. Tonight we let survivors and family of victims of massacres, indiscriminate landmine explosions and of the murderous activities of a powerful and secretive gang tell their stories. We’ll tell you about the Inkatha Freedom Party’s accusations and apologies made on Thursday and we’ll explain why the Truth Commission refused amnesty to four people in jail. But first, a macabre story of the brutal execution of nine people and the elaborate lies fabricated by the state. A story of the men who never took prisoners, the Vlakplaas death squad. Last week in Durban a mother asked the Truth Commission why was my child mowed down in a hay of bullets on that night in June 1988 on the Swazi border? Tonight we give her an answer.
