TimeSummary
50In October last year we told you the story of six East Rand COSAS activists who blew themselves up with booby trapped hand grenades supplied by Joe Mamasela. That led to the harrowing necklacing of Maki Skosana after their funeral. The Truth Commission hearing in Duduza paid tribute to Skosana last year as an innocent victim. But this week the single survivor of the hand grenade incident told the Amnesty Committee that it was Maki Skosana who introduced him to Joe Mamasela.Full Transcript and References
23The hand grenades were rigged to explode as soon as the pins were pulled out and this is what happened at midnight on 25 June 1985. It was a specific instruction from him. He told me that the instruction had been approved by General Coetzee, with the knowledge and approval of Minister Louis Le Grange and President PW Botha. 14:42At the funeral for the activists Maki Skosana was identified as an informer and we witnessed for the first time the harrowing results on national television. The Truth Commission heard in Duduza this year that Maki was an innocent victim. // After Maki’s funeral there were also rumours that were circulating that they had killed the wrong person. They were supposed to have killed another Maki that is my neighbour. // Maki and her family have emerged after all these disclosures as heroes. Who have witnessed this testimony are witnesses of how noble Maki was and I will without shame request this house to stand and observe a moment of silence. Can we all rise?Full Transcript and References
55But this week Philip Lukhele, former COSAS activist and survivor of the incident placed Maki in the presence of Joe Mamasela several times during the period leading up to the incident. // Maki Skosana was in the black Jetta at Thubela’s night vigil as well as, at the black Jetta, she was present when we were given the hand grenades.Full Transcript and References
24Although Philip Lukhele said that he was not present at the funeral when Maki Skosana was killed he told the Committee about the accusations leveled at her at that time. // I said before that she was an activist and she could not get arrested or, they didn’t arrest her so she was giving the police some information about us.Full Transcript
