Was shot and injured in an arson attack by Inkatha supporters on his home in Madadeni, KwaZulu, near Newcastle, Natal, on 27 April 1986. He was extinguishing the flames when he and his brothers were shot. His mother died in hospital as a result of her injuries. Another brother, a NACTU member, was killed some months later by members of the KwaZulu Police.
