Was shot in the cheek by members of the SAP in Sharpeville, Transvaal, on 3 September 1984 during community action against town councillors in the Vaal uprising. He was allegedly walking with his brother and two friends when police opened fire killing his brother. Sekgonyane and his friends were allegedly taken to Vereeniging police station where they were kicked and beaten with sjamboks before being taken to hospital.
