Description A chairperson of the Western Cape Civic Association and an ANC supporter who was pulled from a vehicle and shot dead by named and other members of the Western Cape Black Taxi Association in Philippi, Cape Town, on 8 July 1991. His driver was also shot dead. Mr Mapongwana had played a mediating role in ongoing taxi conflicts, which had acquired a political dimension. He had survived two previous assassination attempts in 1990, one of which had killed his wife. See taxi violence.
