The applicant, Richard Mputukezi Sodo, is hereby
GRANTED: amnesty in terms of the Act for the offence of public violence and attending an unlawful gathering committed on the 7 June 1991 whilst he was a student at Port St John's College in Umtata.
Applicant says he participated in the commission of the aforesaid offences in furtherance of one of the aims of the African National Congress, and that is to undermine the implementation of the Bantu Education system which deprived blacks of the equal right to education. He says one of the objectives of the gathering and student action was to protest against the unilateral declaration of the Republic of South Africa.
The Committee, after considering the circumstances in which the offences were committed, is satisfied that applicant committed an offence associated with a political objective in terms of the Act. He has also given full disclosure about the incident.
