: DECISION

The applicant applies for amnesty in terms of Act 34 of 1995 as amended (the Act) in respect of unlawful possession of a firearm, a magazine and five rounds of ammunition.

During April 1994 he was a member of the Self Defence Unit (SDU) set in Orlando East. In order to do his duties as such he was issued with a firearm, magazine and ammunition. He had no licence to possess these items. It is common cause that there existed a political dispute between known political parties such as the African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party. The SDU's were established because of this conflict in order to defend certain victims of a political battle.

We are satisfied that the application has complied with the requirements of the Act and amnesty is respect of the offences referred to above is

GRANTED: accordingly.
