			<text>The applicant applies for amnesty in terms of Act 34 of 1995 as amended (the Act) in respect of unlawful possession of a firearm, a magazine and five rounds of ammunition.</text>

			<text>During April 1994 he was a member of the Self Defence Unit (SDU) set in Orlando East.  In order to do his duties as such he was issued with a firearm, magazine and ammunition.  He had no licence to possess these items.  It is common cause that there existed a political dispute between known political parties such as the African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party.  The SDU&#039;s were established because of this conflict in order to defend certain victims of a political battle.</text>
