A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

MR VAN DEN BERG: Personally I don't think that I did anything wrong. But Col Erwee made enquiries at the investigating team of the Attorney-General and they said that they were investigating a case of conspiracy to commit murder against us, and that is why I am here.
MR LE ROUX: I was part of a team and we saw it as that and I did not know how many people would die. I thought that the area that we targeted was more an office area and also a sort of a bad neighbourhood.
MR RICHARD: Now in the nature of things, because you say you're familiar with these things, you would have known that if it were a transmitter there would have been a back-up team listening to the transactions where the deceased was and they would have known where he went.
MR HATTINGH: That is when you decided to deploy others, or at least members of your team to go to Meyer's house.
"... I also said, it should read he also said, that is you, also said he once heard from the late Mothiba that Warrant Officer Coetzee and his team once arrested a lady ..."
MR VERMEULEN: The team that moved out with us, Mr Chairperson.
We thank Sollie Terblanche and his team for supplying the sound which has enabled you to hear the proceedings and we thank you to hear the team of interpreters who have allowed you to hear it in your own language. They carry out very demanding work, very tiring and very important and we thank them ...
And I need to say that we do not and cannot address you fully on what took place in the programme because we do not know. That is for you to decide. Nor can we address you fully on what are the issues that are going to come before you. Nor what matters will be the subject of cross-examination by ...
This is what the Chairman tried to explain. I want to give you the full picture. Now, here Captain Kleyn jumps from a vehicle - he confronts those people. The same people known to members of this team, who you were commanding, they identified them as the attackers. And suddenly he started ...
MR ZEELIE: That is correct, Mr Chairperson, but there was talk, or we were told that we were not supposed to talk to anybody and then the bomb exploded and it was via my wife that I was told that I had to be at my house at a certain stage and then members of the Amnesty Committee, from the ...
"Deception on a spectacular scale is precisely what happened in this case. In consequence the first, and perhaps only, opportunity to hold individuals in senior positions accountable for attempts to eliminate political opponents by violent means has been lost. Furthermore, serious allegations are ...
Secondly I would like to draw the committee's attention to the Caprivi hearing where Mr Maritz and Mr Penzhorn appeared and there the committee allowed the defence to have submissions which would commence with the attorney, switching to the senior counsel and then finally being concluded by the ...
MR WILLIAMSON: No, Mr Chairman, it isn't incorrect. As I have already said about the so-called final briefing, it was not merely a final briefing in that everybody sat and heard everything. We were gathered in a flat and there were various discussions, there was a briefing by the Brigadier and as ...
MR VAN DER WALT: I think that when the further revelations came to light in 1993, 1994, I am not sure exactly when, there was an investigating team from Judge Goldstone who visited me at my home, and I denied everything at that stage as well.
MR VISSER: Ms Miller, I am not going to argue about that, we were not, we are not an investigation team with access to these things, you are.
MR STEYN: That's correct. On this occasion it was ordered or I received an order that a national investigating team should be put together and that the matter should be investigated thoroughly to be able to reveal everything in respect of this operation, but that in all probability and due to the ...
MR VISSER: Then there's also the matter of the transgression of the international borders and customs control legislation and also the offences with regard to the possession, use and transport of arms and ammunition which was used by the team, is that correct?
MR SIBANYONI: Were you part of the team which brought him back from Lesotho to Ladybrand?
MR HATTINGH: And later, when you made the other statement, was it a statement which you made to the Attorney-General's Investigative Team?
When the internal supporters of the ANC/SACP alliance were not able to succeed by means of methods we've already mentioned to promote mass participation in the armed struggle then they used intimidation to a great extent. Moderate people in the black townships lived in fear and they were forced ...
