A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

MR VAN DER HEYDE: No Mr Chairperson, but I was also involved in the beginning when the TRC process started, to go to all the hostels and to do groundwork, to find out who of their people are in jail for political offences and we then as sort of a legal team, which involved Nel Kotze and van Dyk ...
MR LAMEY: And from there then you made statements to the investigating team from the Attorney-General's office. Can you briefly tell the Committee what the circumstances were surrounding the signing of your initial amnesty application? How did this come about?
MR PIENAAR: I can only start, Chairperson, by saying that I did not have any knowledge beforehand of this operation that was executed by Capt van Dyk and his team. One morning he approached me in my office and informed me that he had a man at Moolman that was brought from Swaziland, and if I would ...
MR BOTHA: From the nearest house, yes. The specific place which we refer to, was a place which we have already pointed out to the Investigation Team here in Durban. It is two houses next to each other and the closest house from there, is about 300 metres.
At that point, Stanza was punched in the stomach by Zeelie who was part of that team and he fell on the bed, and the other Policemen was busy registering books that he found in the flat, asking if Stanza was drunk in Afrikaans, and also punched him.
We would also like to express our appreciation to the security provided to us, in particular Captain Mkushe and his team, as well as the Uniformed Branch and the Traffic Branch; the caterers who have fed us so well, and the sound technicians and everybody else involved - Lulanga, Ms Mtanga for the ...
MR VISSER: You have missed something. Can you recall whether you made any false statements to that investigative team?
MR ROSLEE: I did. I was part of his team.
Hechter testified that during the relevant time he was based in Pretoria where he worked under the command of Cronje.  He was in charge of a team of operatives who occasionally went out at night to attack people whom they saw as enemies of the previous government.  It was their task to defend ...
After a burglary at Effesus House, which was the subject matter of another amnesty hearing of 1st and 3rd Applicants, a Vlakplaas team under Eugene de Kock broke into this house and later burnt it down. The 3rd Applicant was normally attached to Unit C2 but was recruited by De Kock for the ...
MR VISSER: That is the one that you signed as it would appear from page 61, before a member of the investigative team of the Attorney-General, is that correct?
MR VISSER: At the beginning of 1962 you were transferred to Inkobo as branch officer and in the same year you were transferred to Rosebank in Johannesburg as a detective, and in in 1963 you went to the security branch at Intergraze(?) and there you were involved in investigating matters, you were ...
"In this context it is important and significant that Snyman gave a very comprehensive statement covering all operations which he gave to the investigating team. According to Snyman the Motherwell operation was also mentioned in that statement, but not dealt with in any detail. The taking of a ...
Yes, I suppose one could argue the matter in small detail and try and make headway, but for our purposes, we are not going anywhere. Can I just say this to you, as an example and I think you've mentioned it, is that you questioned the use of - or the training in RPG7s. Now say for instance you're ...
MR MALINDI: Thank you, Chairperson. It's Malindi, M-a-l-i-n-d-i, I represent the victims. I appear with my attorney, Mr Koopedi, who is not in at the moment but will be joining this team later during the course of the day.
MR NORTJE: I crossed the border that night. I was a member of the support team. We came to a point near the house and placed the bomb. I recall that I saw when the person emerged from the structure, and this is when the crisis ensued.
MR HATTINGH: In Denmark you were represented by various members of an Investigative Team which included Dr D'Oliviera, the then Attorney General for Transvaal as well as people like Adv Pretorius and Adv Ackerman and so forth?
ADV GCABASHE: In relation to the 31st August which is the day that the Vlakplaas team successfully completed this operation, in relation to that when did you see General Erasmus, one week, one month, two months before?
MR BOSCH: I received my instructions from Mr de Kock, he told me to reserve places in Richards Bay for the whole team. We were then to travel down before the time, me, Vermeulen and Botha and then create an alibi there so that if any queries were ever made we could say that they were somewhere in ...
MR WASSERMAN: The instruction was to - well there was a bit of pandemonium when the message was that they had left and we were not, we went to great pains to make sure that we could catch up with the vehicle, so that we could inform the team what was happening.
