A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

CHAIRPERSON: Who was in control of the team?
MR PRETORIUS: Physically I went with the team, I made the preparation as to how we will enter Botswana, where we will wait for Mr Lengene and how we will bring him back to the Republic. So I was part of the planning and of the seizing of Mr Lengene.
MR VAN DER MERWE: Yes Mr Chairperson, thank you very much. I have been brought up to speed by the Evidence Leader. I have spoken to the legal team also representing the families and the victims. I've also had an opportunity to speak to the legal team representing the applicants. I have ...
MS PATEL: Part of the tasks then that you would have assigned to the Investigative Team in Cradock, would also then have been who assisted the person who has applied for asylum, not so?
MR MBANDAZAYA: And you were playing rugby in Butterworth, is not that so, a team there in Butterworth, you were playing local team? I still remember you.
upstairs on the 10th floor, I think it was. They had teams of interrogators. Of course there no rest in-between. They kept that up because as one team went off the other team arrived. Perhaps they would allow you perhaps an hour or two to go back to the cell, and then the new team would be ...
scholars and all of us became tighter, closer and in a very short time, we as a team found that we were held in very high esteem in this town of Queenstown.
MS GROBBELAAR: My name is Janice Grobbelaar and I'm the Information Manager in this office and I'm not a psychologist I'm a sociologist so that might be a problem. I would like to address broadly, the issue Augustine has put to us about him coming to the Commission and him being told that the ...
MR SONTI: It is rare that as a member of the Kaizer Chiefs my child would favour another team. I don’t know how he was killed as I was not there.
MR CLOETE: I would have been interested but like I said, Capt Opperman spoke to the team leader about what had happened and they thought they shot Victor Ntuli.
MR SCHOON: They were members of the investigative team of which I was the head at that stage. The latter mentioned persons later reported that two terrorists had been confronted near Zeerust and that one had been shot dead and the other captured. They brought the arrestee with to Pretoria.
MR SIBANYONI: The impression I’ve got when I read the applicants is that they surprised the occupants of the house. But when one reads the report apparently coming from Lawrence, is that he was working in conjunction with the team. How did you understand the operation? How was it conducted?
MR CORNELIUS: Yes. But I think that clears the situation up. This is purely I understand from my instructions, after the Attorney-General's Special Investigations Team, alleged that he was kidnapped, that this application was drawn by my client. I will leave it at that for what it is worth, Mr ...
MR HATTINGH: You also made a statement to the Attorney-General and his investigating team, is that correct?
I tried in every possible way to try and find out who was behind all these actions, but we didn't get anywhere with that. Later when I was already in Pretoria, General Smit and I, arising from allegations from Holomisa, we visited him and a joint investigating team was appointed with members from ...
Nelish and Constable Williams were, and Williams were at the parked cars, which was in the street. Singh and myself were outside the gate. I had my R5 rifle with me, Constable Singh had his 9 mm and we were the back-up team for Constable Ayer and Nkono. A little while later I saw Constable Nkono ...
MS IRISH: I mean we would be happy to co-operate with the investigation team in following up whatever witnesses are needed as a result of the report.
So as our Chairperson has said in the previous cases, our investigative team has visited the Upington police station to look for the relevant documents and have been informed that all the records for the period 1985 to 1993 have been destroyed, but we will be following this up. I would like to ...
During 1990 the Applicant received a cache of arms from his commander Eugene de Kock together with a number of his colleagues.  They were told to conceal the arms for possible further use in the event of future Nuremberg trials.  He transported the arms to his house but after his arrest in ...
During his detention Walus was at first not prepared to give any statements to the police. After prolonged interrogation and due to the fact that he was given alcohol by the police, he started co-operating with them. He was also misled into believing that some members of the interrogation team ...
