A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR MAMASELA: I went with the Special Investigation team of the Attorney General, that was the first and the last time I ever went there, I never went there again.
MR McBRIDE: Yes, I just want to mention this is the first time I have heard of a Mr Baker, at all, related to this incident. Not in the trial court or in subsequent appeal hearings or anywhere else has a Mr Baker been referred to. Neither was this name included in the summary of substantial facts ...
I was not involved with the terrorist desk and I denied this to Mr Dumisa, I said that they did not report to me namely Captain Venter. I did not even know Captain Venter - of the whole team and those who were at Post Chalmers, I only knew Moss personally. And I also said this to Mr Dumisa as ...
MR MOERANE: And the purpose of that gathering has been said to be one of team-building, "spanbou".
MR BIZOS: Mr Chairman could I clarify. I have no objection to a version being put to a witness, but we must be told whether it is in - and he can cross examine on it if he so desires - I object to the Affidavit going in in the absence of an assurance that General Erasmus is going to be called and ...
MR RICHARD: Now in the nature of things, because you say you're familiar with these things, you would have known that if it were a transmitter there would have been a back-up team listening to the transactions where the deceased was and they would have known where he went.
He participated in the planning of the operation and headed the surveillance team that observed the transit house prior to the execution of the operation.  He participated in the planning and the execution of the operation and in particular shot the deceased Rapula Thika.
He then a few days later finds or is requested by Doctor van Niekerk to inspect the number of burnt bodies in the mortuary. Given - or let's postulate normal times, a policeman with that knowledge would I think have a duty to at least inform the investigation team tasked with the investigation of ...
MR MAZIBUKO: Like I have indicated that in a way, in terms of the situation, we could no longer be in a position to control our members, but we were as leadership in a position to restrain them from certain activities. Finally our area was left without police, but I would also like to take this ...
MR SIBANYONI: This working relationship between Lesotho Security Forces and the team of your unit, was it among others to give you easy operation, in other words that you could operate easily within the Lesotho territory?
On my far left, which I assume is appropriate and wearing a tie for the first time for many months, Mr Ilan Lax, who is from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu/Natal, he is an attorney by profession. But he is a full Committee member, full-time working for the TRC and a very valuable member of the team ...
in our custody, but IEU's in team.
On the 14th of March 1982 an explosive device was detonated at the offices of the ANC in London. This operation, carried out thousands of kilometres from the front line and in clear violation of international law, was authorised by a formation Commissioner of Police and member of the State Security ...
MRS DERBY-LEWIS: The first point is of course, that on the face of it the TRC did have a report and the face of it - as I will refer to just now, it would appear that Mr Bizos’s team had access to this report which we didn’t because on Wednesday afternoon he asked certain questions and those ...
We already heard from Mr de Kock yesterday that Mr Coetser was part of the assault team. We've also heard from Mr de Kock yesterday that Mr Coetser was one of two members whom he sent to the Meyer House to kill, or who ultimately landed up killing Leon Meyer and Jackie Quinn. I submit that ...
MR WILLIAMS: Is it correct that you don't have a clear recollection of who exactly gave you the order, but you infer from the fact that Mr Nortje was your Team Leader, that he was the one who gave you the specific instruction?
From his evidence Sir it appears that even to get his mail he must use his father's work address. And he says even in that instance, Alice being what it is he still cannot get his mail as he should get it. Looked at, in the background of what he has painted to the Committee, one can only ...
MR BIZOS: Page 22 - 23 Mr Chairman. The passage has no corrections by the Attorney's team Mr Chairman.
MR ZWANE: Once, after coming from prison, as I have stated to you that I was arrested in the process of the formation of the team.
MR ERASMUS: No, Mr Ngo was there on detached service. Earlier this morning I mentioned the investigating team which worked there but I don’t have knowledge of any other individuals.
