Late Thursday afternoon an undercurrent of this whole drama came to the surface: Madikizela-Mandela’s political ambition to become the deputy president of the ANC and of South Africa. // Is there an opinion by a section of our country about the nomination of yourself to the deputy presidency of the African National Congress in December? // Yes that is true. As a matter of fact, as far as I was concerned the subpoena could have been served last year, it could have been served many, many moons ago and the unhealthy coincidence in my mind that this must happen a few days before the National Conference, to me, suggest it is part and parcel of that agenda. A whole lot of other things which are not necessarily connected to this Truth Commission hearing happened and it has been a common culture that every time we are nearing some event, some national event which is connected with the African National Congress, things such as this would happen.
