Special Report Transcript Episode 77, Section 4, Time 49:48

Back to Gauteng now, to Mamelodi just north of Pretoria in fact, where the Amnesty Committee continued its hearing into the 1993 assassination of Communist Party leader Chris Hani. If the flamboyant figure of Madikizela-Mandela loomed large in Mayfair, the dowdy, bespectacled Gaye Derby-Lewis – wife of Clive Derby-Lewis – dominated the proceedings. Gaye Derby-Lewis was acquitted of murder in 1993 while her husband and his co-conspirator, Janusz Walus was sentenced to life imprisonment. She took the stand to speak for these two men and explain what had motivated them politically to kill Hani on the eve of a negotiated settlement.
