A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

MR BOOYENS: On page or paragraph 28 you deal with the situation on the ground and, perhaps, just for sake of completeness, there is a little bit more detail here. That morning, very, very early, before it was light, this police task team moved in?
MR CORNELIUS: Did you believe that evening when you waited with your team at the scene of the ambush, that the robbers would indeed be heavily armed?

Mr Olifant, in the bundle before you this Panel there is on page 146 to 152, an initial application dated the 11th of December 1996, signed before a Commissioner of Oaths, Andrew Liesk. Can I just lead you on this. Is this the first application that you submitted to the TRC with the assistance ...
MS MARCUS: I don't recall the specifics, but probably myself and others who had been part of preparing them. We would have a team who would be part of collecting the banners and distributing them at the march.
CHAIRPERSON: But that is the reason for my questions. You were there, you handled the beers, you were a member of the team which went on this operation, why can't we determine what these beers would have been used for?
CROSS-EXAMINATION BY MR HUGO: Yes, thank you Mr Chairman. Colonel Willy, who was the Head of this Investigation Team that was tasked to bring the culprits to book and to take them to court?
Thank you. The interrogation team consisted of several members of the special branch. Is that right? --- Yes, that's right. They used to work in rotation.
MR WILLS: Yes, because Gen Steyn has conceded during his cross-examination that the members of de Beer's unit, of de Beer's investigation team who were investigating on a national level the Operation Vula, were looking for these people and so you were part of the plan to tell these people that you ...
MR HATTINGH: Was it members of the team who were involved with the operation that went down to Durban, to discuss the matter with the Durban Security Police?

and his team as well, they viewed them as well, so it is no secret
MR WALUS: Mr Chairman it's half the truth because the police discovered this list but I can't say I gave it to them, I have no other option, they discovered it and took it. They were investigating team about this assassination. I couldn't give anything, I was not in the position to give or not, I ...
MR MATTHEWS: You would have to ask my legal team about that. I cannot answer that question. I have been in prison, I do not have free access to him and I cannot see him when I want to.
MR NTULI: There are so many reasons. This person was training us in Karate in the area, when he joined the IFP and the other young boys, because there was this Youth League and the others who were in the soccer team, most of the young boys who were involved there and some of them, most of them ...
Now we did our best and now on that hot pursuit, we arrested a lot of people, more especially people in whose villages we found our team staff which had been captured in that ambush.
MR BOOYENS: It seems as though he’s a manager of a team of informers, to put it in ordinary language?
MR BIZOS: And Mr Verster had the same legal team?
