A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

MR MANTHATA: Perhaps what I can do would be to request you if you have anything or documentation, be it at home or with you here, that you leave them with us. Two or three days after they had arrived at Josini, Mngomezulu was loaded onto Schoon's bakkie.  He, Pienaar, Willemse, Van Dyk and Schoon left in two vehicles.  He then already knew that Mngomezulu would be eliminated.  They left for Sodwana and travelled south.  They stopped.  He recalls ...

MR MANTHATA: Okay. I will leave you over to Russel Ally, who has had contact with our investigative team on this matter. Perhaps he can lead you on the basis of what he might be having in the office. Over to you Russel.
In the Standerton area the United Democratic Front ("UDF") enjoyed widespread support as a "peoples' organisation" from residents and the youth. Initially things went very well as the youth largely identified themselves with the UDF. But later problems started when some of the youth in the area ...

MR KENDALL: Much talk was heard of this. I was for example at Vlaklaagte where there was a shooting incident, where Mbukoto - or the information that was given to me, that it was a number of men who broke up a youth gathering and the shooting took place and some of the youths were killed, but I ...
Firstly the police investigation was limited by the resources that were made available and the lack of vigour with which the police pursued the investigation and the interference in the investigation by the arms of the state. As one of the examples, the Oribi Hotel at the top of our street was an ...
MR MNISI: They were there watching and they knew very well that he was my friend. We grew up together, we were playing in one soccer team and we were also vendors.

You prepared your application according to Section 18 of the Act, and you gave your cooperation to the Investigative Team of the TRC, is that correct?

MR NORTJE: I took the investigative team to the scene and that was about 10 years ago and the trees seemed, or seemed like they were cut down and they started growing, but the original trees were taller than those in photo 6A.
