A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

After having supper with the family I then decided to visit one of my team mates who stays one street from me in Alexandra Location. It was still early in the emergency time. I thought that I won't waste time at his place and be as quick as possible. I managed to arrive there and chat football ...
burning of the shop is clearly indicated that I became financially bankrupt. Even today I have nothing. Even if I could take it further to the lawyers and attorneys. All those who were investigating, they say those people whom you suspect they say they are innocent. Until now that I get the correct ...
MR McINTYRE: Mr Chairperson, during a visit of the Investigative team of the TRC, they visited me, I think I assisted them in certain matters and I received this form from a member of the Investigative team and I filled in this form in Umtata, as best I could, and when I decided to contact a lawyer ...
MR RUDOLPH: Chairperson, on the 17th of September 1990, I was arrested. This was after I was forced underground. I was detained in terms of Section 29 and any one who was detained under Section 29 will know how draconian this was. At the time of these events, after the video, after we compiled ...
Initially I did not want to apply for amnesty because I felt I did not do anything wrong, but I was informed at some stage that a case of murder was investigated by the Attorney General's team.
MRS MARCH: Ja, I went to hospital to visit him. By then he could still talk. When I asked him what happened he told me that he was shot at by the police and I asked him why, what was the problem. Then his answer was that don't you worry, a day will come for them. What he wanted to know was to ...
It also gave short courses on how to plant limpet mines. Our specific target was an ANC terrorist, whose MK name was Pansu Smith, who operated from a house near Mbabane. The attack team was made up of members of Vlakplaas. We moved into Swaziland to organise the attack.
CHAIRPERSON: Members of the IFP and the ANC do they play in the same team? Soccer?
MR WILLS: And he got involved in some brawl with certain people and then he came to pick his team up to assist him in that brawl?
MR STANDER: Just allow me, because you have pertinently asked me - I am going to haste to say that it is highly improbable that there was a so-called sticker on that wall while we have had evidence here referring to the attempts by police officers not to propagate assaults or allow it, and that the ...
MR VISSER: Mr Zeelie, it is not the duty of someone like Mr Van der Merwe to see to it that cases appear in court, that is the duty of the investigation team who investigates the case, isn't it?
I couldn’t afford to go to school because of the assaults, they were accusing me of something I didn’t do, some things like public violence at the age of 15. While my parents were so sickly the policemen use to come at home, but they couldn’t find me because I was a soccer player, I use to go out ...
MR MANTHATA: In your injury, was he part of the team which used to defend you?
MR GOVANSAMY: Chairperson, may I just add one thing? My name is Gary Govansamy. I was part of the team for my family, taking up the cudgels for them in this instance. I want to say that I understand the political process. I understand the whole question of reconciliation and truth. It has been ...
We then left that house because we were aware that he knew about it. From that day we learnt that other comrades such as Aron Matse, Team(?) and Desmond had been arrested and other comrades whose name I cannot recall now, but it was mostly the leadership of CYL who had been arrested.
MR BELLINGAN: Mr Chairman, very likely this was would have been part of a cover story which I would have discussed in confidence with my legal team at the time. So aside from the fact that there's the item of privilege, it comes from my files. Now surely it can't be in the interest of justice for ...
MR WILLEMSE: Chairperson, when I made this statement it was in front of the Investigating Team and there were so many parties on the farm that I can't really place this, why I specifically mentioned it. There was an incident one afternoon where I carried gravel to Vlakplaas and after which Colonel ...
Mr Bester, when you say that Mr More was a member of the interrogation team and participated in the interrogation of Mr Lubane, are you saying that he would be present during the interrogation conducted by Capt Prinsloo, but wouldn't do anything, wouldn't put questions to Mr Lubane?
MR LEOPENG: Maybe with the leave of the Panel, can I ask you was Mr Fourie also part of your team who abducted - who spoke to Mr Sedibe at Piet Retief?
MS SEROKE: Maurice, in this statement, it shows that there was an inquest and we are going to ask our investigation team to investigate and get the results so that we can corroborate these things that you've just told us. I'll ask the other Commissioners if they'd like to say anything.
