A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

ADV DU PLESSIS: There’s a few aspects that I just want to clear up. The purpose of the or rather let me put it differently, what Captain Venter and his team were told regarding their involvement, were you present? Do you have any knowledge of it?
CHAIRPERSON: Thank you Mr Visser. Mr Mapoma, may I just confirm that I believe you are part of the team that is representing the victims?
ADV SANDI: Thank you for your evidence, Sir, because it is clear that you yourself investigated as well. After you have finished, there are men, we have an Investigative Team. We request that you give all the evidence that you can about the man who was a member of the ADM from Port Elizabeth so ...
So as our Chairperson has said in the previous cases, our investigative team has visited the Upington police station to look for the relevant documents and have been informed that all the records for the period 1985 to 1993 have been destroyed, but we will be following this up. I would like to ...
MS IRISH: I mean we would be happy to co-operate with the investigation team in following up whatever witnesses are needed as a result of the report.
MR ROUX: And did you also know, upon the second occasion, what was aimed at by Hechter and the rest of his team?
MR PULE: I would explain it this way, although I will deviate from this point. For example when you play soccer, playing for a first division team and then you are recruited by another team in the first division, when you arrive at that team, that does not mean because you come from another team, ...
MS GROBBELAAR: My name is Janice Grobbelaar and I'm the Information Manager in this office and I'm not a psychologist I'm a sociologist so that might be a problem. I would like to address broadly, the issue Augustine has put to us about him coming to the Commission and him being told that the ...
I tried in every possible way to try and find out who was behind all these actions, but we didn't get anywhere with that. Later when I was already in Pretoria, General Smit and I, arising from allegations from Holomisa, we visited him and a joint investigating team was appointed with members from ...
Nelish and Constable Williams were, and Williams were at the parked cars, which was in the street. Singh and myself were outside the gate. I had my R5 rifle with me, Constable Singh had his 9 mm and we were the back-up team for Constable Ayer and Nkono. A little while later I saw Constable Nkono ...
MR NORTJE: Yes, there were quite a bit of police, there were Detectives, Mr Alberts was there, they were waiting for the Forensic Team from Pretoria. I know that they telephoned Gen Krappies, I don't know who it was that contacted him, but he was also informed. I don't know whether it was Klopper ...
ADV BOOYENS: And if there were four members in a team and one was an informer, would it be reasonable that amongst the four of these members, they would have had reasonably good knowledge of whom the informers were and they had general knowledge of the security system and network?
Thank you advocate Van Zyl and I also thank the other members of the legal team whom you have place on record as your instructors. Before we begin may I recognise as being present in our mists certain persons. We have I am told members of the former anti apartheid movement as it then existed in ...
MR CORNELIUS: Mr Chairman, in support, Cornelius, my client, Mr Flores, I was informed by the TRC team is only arriving from Phalaborwa at one o'clock, so if you want to have an extended lunch, I wouldn't like to derail it. I support Mr Visser as far as tomorrow morning is concerned, if it suits ...
ADV GCABASHE : So your understanding is that Mr Naude and his team was simply carrying out an instruction from the Security Branch, but they did it the way they understood best in terms of the logistics and who would do what exactly?
MR ALBERTS: And were you then part of this team of vehicles, if I can call it that?
CHAIRPERSON: Mr Nieuwoudt's team, the people that he normally worked with?
CHAIRMAN: Mrs Mvuka, thank you for coming. I would please appeal to you, just after you have finished with us here today, to speak to one of our statement-takers so that we can take the particulars of Kenny, where he is living, if you have his address. Perhaps he will be willing to speak to us ...
MR SWANEPOEL: Yes, could you look at paragraph 5 of Exhibit E1 that was handed to the Committee. I know you don't read Afrikaans, but I will roughly translate it for you. That was the deposition made by yourself to the Investigating Team of the Attorney General's office some nine months after you ...
MR THULARE: But as part of the team that was supposed to keep the public away, wasn't it contemplated that you may have difficulty in keeping them away because you were involved in a clandestine operation which you couldn't publicly...[intervention]
