TimeSummary
04A hymn, a list of dead, a man who believes he was an assassin’s target; a heartfelt apology and a Shakespearean plea that the full truth of ANC aggression be unleashed were the ingredients of the IFP submission to the Truth Commission on Thursday. It was the last political party to make a submission despite its earlier claims that the Commission is a witch hunt aimed at enemies of the ANC.Full Transcript
31The much awaited IFP perspective on the conflicts of the past was dominated by one main concern: that acts of aggression against its members had gone unquestioned. It appeared before the Commission as a victim and developed a case against the ANC as primary perpetrator. // I’ve decided to come here, your grace, members of the Commission, because we cannot in all conscience remain silent when no effort is made by this Commission to question who has killed 420 plus of the IFP’s leaders and murdered thousands of its supporters. These serial killings are a crime against humanity and demand answers. If this Commission wishes to establish the truth about our past then we’d suggest it owes the Republic of South Africa an explanation about the killings of IFP leaders and supporters. Nowhere else in the world could killing on such a grand scale go unchallenged and unexplained. We believe this Commission should ponder who has done the killing. The president of the ANC and current state ...moreFull Transcript
00The party then went on to establish exactly who in its view was responsible and it went right back to the past to trace the routes of what it termed protracted black on black violence. // The conflict between the ANC and our organisation is rooted in different responses to the problem of apartheid. Those responses began more than three decades ago and there has in our view been little substantive change in the strategies adopted by the two organisations to bring about fundamental transformation in our country. KwaZulu and the IFP in particular have been the target of ANC destabilization policies since the failed 1979 conference to persuade the then Inkatha cultural liberation movement to become a surrogate of the ANC. The different strategies to overcome apartheid proved irreconcilable and at that conference and from then on onwards Inkatha was singled out as an enemy because it refused to crook the knee to the ANC or accept a strategy of armed struggle and the destruction of the ...moreFull Transcript
13From Inkatha’s point of view no rewriting of history should ever be allowed to hide the fact that the ANC spent many years far more involved in fighting and killing their fellow black South Africans than they spent involved in fighting the crime at the time in fighting the regime of the time. In addition to this campaign tens of thousands of IFP supporters have suffered intimidation and harassment. Thousands more were driven from their homes. The Inkatha Freedom Party is repeatedly sought to place this unprecedented programme of serial killing and maiming on the political agenda for discussion. The three main elements of the IFP charge against the apartheid government and the ANC outlined in the documents were as follows: that MK was responsible for much of the killing, that much of this emanated from Transkei, that the apartheid government was party to an agreement allowing the ANC to continue to recruit for Umkhonto we Sizwe for training outside South Africa.Full Transcript and References
17But while the IFP asked for the truth about who conducted the violence against it the party had little to say about its own culpability. It did though apologise for having been drawn into the violence which it says it was in no way responsible for. // My own deep convictions that violence is evil and must not be used for political purposes, and despite the Inkatha Freedom Party’s constant vigil to keep violence out of the Inkatha Freedom Party’s politics, I know the Inkatha Freedom Party members and supporters have been drawn into violence. I say I’m sorry to South Africa for this because I’ve not orchestrated one single act of violence against one single victim of the political violence that has cost us many lives. As the leader of the IFP Freedom Party I know that the bark stops right in front of me. From my side I wish to say I’m sorry for any hurt that I have caused the ANC leadership. I sincerely hope that the apology to Mr. Mandela and others that I carry in my heart ...moreFull Transcript
