It was a turning point which unleashed sustained upheaval in the region. Charles Maroti was one of those who went to release Mandela from Pollsmoor. On his return to Gugulethu he was shot and killed while running away from the police. When they were dragging him to the hippo, they finished him off right inside the hippo.
