The generals of the former police force seem to have a defined attitude, while the National Defence Force also appears rather reluctant to cooperate. The military submission that was supposed to be made to the Truth Commission on Monday was cancelled at very short notice through a statement to the media. And the Truth Commission investigators were denied access to military documents this week. South Africans are beginning to ask questions about the Commission’s ability and willingness to take a firm stand in the quest for the truth about our past. Where are the real perpetrators, they ask. Why is the Commission not using its powers to force people to reveal crucial information? Are we going to be asked to reconcile without knowing the truth?
