Special Report Transcripts for Section 4 of Episode 22
Time | Summary | | 22:13 | South Africa is going to see a whole new picture emerging from the Truth Commission in the next few days, says Deputy Chairman Alex Boraine. I asked him if it wasn’t time for the other side of the story to be heard. | Full Transcript | 22:26 | I think the work of the normal hearings where people come and tell their stories is very important. That’s where we started and we have no reason to change our mind about that. The catharsis that has taken place for white and black alike, men and women, old, young, seems to have done something towards the reconciling work that we are committed to. But I think you’re absolutely right, I think we’re being very slow on the whole question of the other side of the question, namely the perpetrators. I mean over and over again we hear appeals, we want to know what happened, we want to know who gave the command, we want to know who did it, not out of a spirit of revenge in most instances but because they want to know. And I think we have a right to know and I think we have been very very slow. // We invited the police generals to come because they said, you don’t have to subpoena us; we are willing to cooperate. Frankly we are totally dissatisfied with their response. They’ve now ...more | Full Transcript | 26:09 | It will certainly be a welcome change to hear a version of the past from perpetrators rather than victims. And we’re going to have a good dose of it. Apart from the secretive six policemen convicted, Trust Feed killer Brian Mitchell will tell his story and name names in two weeks’ time. The week after that the military generals will appear before the Truth Commission and then former Vlakplaas commander Dirk Coetzee will stand before the Amnesty Committee. In the mean time, former minister of police, Adriaan Vlok and several policemen including the former commissioners will be receiving subpoena’s to go and talk to the Truth Commission. But who are the six policemen who are about to spill the beans? The Truth Commission gave an undertaking not to release the six now, but they are among these 22 former and serving policemen. On the 21st of June this year, these men’s lawyer sent this letter to Desmond Tutu saying they intended to apply for amnesty. The letter was never followed ...more | Full Transcript and References | 28:04 | [The ANC is a barbaric organisation that does not care for the destruction of human lives] // Vlok, the letter stated, also supported the 22 men. He’s also about to be subpoenaed by the Truth Commission. It is expected that most of the remaining 16 men on the list will follow with amnesty applications in the next few weeks. The resistance to reveal our past, it seems, is fast crumbling. // But other perpetrators are more reluctant to ask for amnesty. Alex Boraine again. | Full Transcript | 28:39 | Is there a problem from the side of perpetrators, former members of the security forces that they want to have a guarantee of amnesty before they come? // Yes. // And can that be resolved? // No it is a problem and many of them have asked that and we’ve had to say to them there can be no guarantee. We have to go according to the Act and certain conditions are laid down. We can’t predetermine that. It’s like court of law, you can’t say we’re going to not find you guilty, or we’re going to find you guilty. We are going to have to weigh up the evidence. And the Amnesty Committee, and I remind you there are three judges on that Amnesty Committee, apart from two lawyers, and they are accustomed to assessing evidence and weighing it up and trying to get the probability of truth and to get corroboration. So we’ve had to say to the generals, we’ve had to say to individuals who have contacted us, there is no guarantee whatsoever. All we can say is that you have a choice, you ...more | Full Transcript |
