Special Report Transcript Episode 28, Section 1, Time 00:28

Many former policemen were involved in violations of human rights during the apartheid years. Only a few can tell the broader story of what happened and why. Foremost amongst these is Craig Williamson. Tonight we bring you a background report and an interview with the once famous superspy. We have a special report on the South African Defence Force’s raids into Botswana and British anti-apartheid leader Peter Hain talks about South African dirty tricks. A grandmother talks about the suicide of a young man whose spirit was broken when he fought as a conscript in Angola. And we bring you the story of a man who was a monster killer to some, a hero to others. // A black man’s life to them was worthless, so if I have killed at least close to 50 of them, I think I would have died a happy man. // But we start with the man who was seen as the intellectual giant of the security police in the seventies and eighties. Intellectual but also a killer. Major Craig Williamson is about to hand in his substantial application for amnesty to the Truth Commission’s Amnesty Committee.
