It wasn’t AIDS, it wasn’t cancer; it wasn’t old age that killed my father. Somebody walked up to our house armed with a 9 mm pistol and shot him at point blank range. Who? Why? For the last 15 years I have been circling those questions. Now I have come back to a very different South Africa. This is a country poised for democracy, breaking from apartheid. I have come here to confront my past. But I have also come to find out if South Africa is going to confront its past or bury it. Because the reason for my father’s death is wrapped in South Africa’s violent history.
