Dladla survived an attempt on her life when self-defence unit (SDU) members attacked her homestead in the Umgababa area, KwaZulu, near Durban, with a hand grenade on 12 April 1992. The Dladla family were believed to be IFP supporters. The grenade bounced back and injured the two attackers. One SDU member was granted amnesty (AC/2000/061).
