As the ANC’s chief representative in Zimbabwe, as well as its head of intelligence, and a NEC member, Gqabi was shot dead on 31 July 1981 while parking his car in his driveway in Harare, Zimbabwe. While the Commission was unable to establish the exact identity of the perpetrators, available evidence points to a SADF Special Forces hit squad commanded by a white former member of the Rhodesian Security Police.
