A UDF supporter who was detained without trial for six months and tortured while in custody in Westville prison, near Durban, during 1987. Before his detention, his school had been burnt down by SAP members at Inanda, near KwaMashu, Durban, allegedly during a UDF meeting at the school. In 1990, Mr Gumede was shot and injured by the police in Inanda.
