Richard Lyster was born to a Catholic family in Durban in 1953 and has lived in Kwazulu-Natal for most of his life.

Sergeant Richard Motasi was a diligent policeman with no record of complaint against him in 11 years’ service, but in September 1984 he was hit on the ear by a Colonel. That started a series of events that eventually led to his death.

The most surprising and exciting moment in Richard Lyster’s life was when he heard the news that he had been appointed to join the Truth Commission.
