The perpetrators required their vehicle in order to use it in an attack on the Lady Grey police station, Orange Free State (OFS). One APLA member was granted amnesty (AC/1998/0057). Their charred bodies were found in the boot of their car the next day. The incident occurred after an ANC march past a Tokoza hostel on 22 May 1993 led to a dramatic escalation of political violence on the East Rand, leaving at least eighty people dead. He and his family were continually harassed by Security Police who showed them weapons allegedly found in their house. | References | | MBATHA, Alexander Eli | | Was detained and tortured by named policemen at Protea police station, Soweto, Johannesburg, and at John Vorster Square, Johannes-burg, in 1977. During his detention he was kept naked and in solitary confinement for six months. In 1981, Mr Mbatha, his wife and their three-year-old daughter were arrested. He was tortured in various police stations in the Transvaal, and deprived of food and medical attention. | References |
