Was shot dead at his home in central Pietermaritzburg on 25 February 1991. One of the alleged perpetrators is named. Chief Maphumulo of Maqongqo was the president of CONTRALESA, an organisation of traditional leaders, which was aligned with the UDF and ANC. He was also instrumental in the local peace process. He had survived several assassination attempts for his political views.
