While in detention, he was severely tortured, repeatedly beaten, and teargassed in his cell, allegedly because of his political activities. He was charged with attempting to leave the country. He fled into exile while out on bail. | References | MSIMANGO, Emmanuel `Po` Mhlakaniphi | 26 | A UDF supporter who was shot dead by fellow UDF supporters in KwaNdengezi, Kwazulu, near Pinetown, Natal, on 27 March 1990 in the course of a serious internal feud.
