Was severely beaten and detained in Pacaltsdorp, George, Cape, on 13 September 1976 during student protests following the Soweto uprising. He was held at the George police station for a week where he was again severely beaten. He was forced to give a statement. He was convicted of public violence but this was overturned on appeal.
