A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

Used by whom? --- Well, there was a team was in form. That team was in form by the unit. I was one of the team.
After I contacted the special investigation team and told them I would give them my full co-operation, I handed three containers with weapons which I had buried. Mr de Kock also did know of all the weapons and amongst others there were 5 LMGs, 6 Makarovs and some explosives.
MR MAZIBUKO: Well, what we did as a Unit firstly, we planned together as a Unit on this attack. After having planned as a Unit on this attack, I personally went for two weekends at the stadium for reconnaissance purposes, where I reconnoitred because there was a soccer team of Policemen who every ...
De Kock's legal representative then put it to him: "I understand that, but it seems to me that he had already chosen his team and the destination had been determined?" The answer was "That is correct".
MR STEENKAMP: He was part of the Special Investigation Team to investigate certain cases in which you were involved, is that correct?
GEN VAN DER WESTHUIZEN: Yes, I endorse that. I can add that I was part of the team which compiled this document and I'd just like to reiterate that that is my feeling today as well.
MR VEYI: I'd like to make an example. If I still remember well when I started going to that place I went with Sergeant Sefuti. We would be there when she was interrogated. Superintendent Coetzee would be the one who was the leader of the team so when we were there everybody that was present ...
DR VAN RENSBURG: I obviously personally didn't know any, I did meet one. At one stage round about 1989 the Managing Director Swanepoel, organised a team building session weekend at a camp, on a farm in Heidelberg.
Those stories are very enthusiastically investigated at the moment. People are being subpoenaed to give information and part of the final report of the Truth Commission will also be the report on what happened in KwaNdebele. So you can tell your people that although we are not there to report ...
MR MBANDAZAYA: And you were playing rugby in Butterworth, is not that so, a team there in Butterworth, you were playing local team? I still remember you.
MR SONTI: It is rare that as a member of the Kaizer Chiefs my child would favour another team. I don’t know how he was killed as I was not there.
MS PATEL: Part of the tasks then that you would have assigned to the Investigative Team in Cradock, would also then have been who assisted the person who has applied for asylum, not so?
upstairs on the 10th floor, I think it was. They had teams of interrogators. Of course there no rest in-between. They kept that up because as one team went off the other team arrived. Perhaps they would allow you perhaps an hour or two to go back to the cell, and then the new team would be ...
scholars and all of us became tighter, closer and in a very short time, we as a team found that we were held in very high esteem in this town of Queenstown.
MR CLOETE: I would have been interested but like I said, Capt Opperman spoke to the team leader about what had happened and they thought they shot Victor Ntuli.
MR HATTINGH: You also made a statement to the Attorney-General and his investigating team, is that correct?
ADV GCABASHE: Within your Section, Mandela Section, how many members were there in your team, in the SDU that you controlled?
MR SCHOON: They were members of the investigative team of which I was the head at that stage. The latter mentioned persons later reported that two terrorists had been confronted near Zeerust and that one had been shot dead and the other captured. They brought the arrestee with to Pretoria.
MR SIBANYONI: The impression I’ve got when I read the applicants is that they surprised the occupants of the house. But when one reads the report apparently coming from Lawrence, is that he was working in conjunction with the team. How did you understand the operation? How was it conducted?
MR CORNELIUS: Yes. But I think that clears the situation up. This is purely I understand from my instructions, after the Attorney-General's Special Investigations Team, alleged that he was kidnapped, that this application was drawn by my client. I will leave it at that for what it is worth, Mr ...
