A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR VISSER: Were you one of the members of that team?

MR VISSER: Chairperson, it's a good question and we'll probably never know the answer, but what I will suggest to you is that Mr Zeelie was accosted by the Special Investigation team of the Attorney-General and he was confronted and in spite of his denials, he knew at that time that what he was ...
MR MOOIJ: Can you tell the Committee, was there any visible evidence to you or to members of your investigation team which indicated how the money which the applicant told you he had received, how that had been spent?
MS PATEL: But they were invited to this party, not so as part of the membership to the soccer team that Mr Magubane was in charge of?
MR ROSSOUW: The question whether it was an unlawful operation and the previous question as to whether it was just a small identified elite team who by themselves undertook to execute unlawful activities because they believed it would combat the liberation struggle. In the light of that, would you ...

MS VAN DER WALT: Because you see, you are assisted by a very experienced advocate and attorney and during this session of this Committee, several statements have been submitted by your legal team for other applicants which provide further information for their statements which they made initially, ...
CHAIRPERSON: Thank you Chris. I just want to say at this stage that when the idea of bringing on journalists evolved, we then ateamed, the team that was planning for this hearing, I consulted with a few journalists, I think it was about six journalists from whom I asked their opinion of whom we ...
MR VISSER: And did it occur to you that the investigation team was busy with a pretty thorough investigation?
MR BOTHA: From the nearest house, yes. The specific place which we refer to, was a place which we have already pointed out to the Investigation Team here in Durban. It is two houses next to each other and the closest house from there, is about 300 metres.
At that point, Stanza was punched in the stomach by Zeelie who was part of that team and he fell on the bed, and the other Policemen was busy registering books that he found in the flat, asking if Stanza was drunk in Afrikaans, and also punched him.
We would also like to express our appreciation to the security provided to us, in particular Captain Mkushe and his team, as well as the Uniformed Branch and the Traffic Branch; the caterers who have fed us so well, and the sound technicians and everybody else involved - Lulanga, Ms Mtanga for the ...
