A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

CHAIRPERSON: Sorry, before you stop, let me put one of my difficulties to you. Saying now that these men were, I don't know if accomplice is even the right word, they were part of the team that went to Swaziland to unlawfully kidnap Ndwandwe. They played a very active role in the kidnapping.
MR BOOYENS: Mr Chairperson, Mr Cornelius' client has just arrived here. He and I have agreed that I will deal with my team of technical personnel first, so with your permission, may we please make the seating arrangements so that we can all take our positions. Could we adjourn, I don't know what ...
MR VAN HEERDEN: The typical human reaction to this would have been tension in the team, if there was a leadership crisis.
De Kock's legal representative then put it to him: "I understand that, but it seems to me that he had already chosen his team and the destination had been determined?" The answer was "That is correct".
MR MAFOJANE: Now, my last question, Mr Vlok, were you part of the team that - or rather let me phrase it this way - you were part of the government during the negotiation phase, is it not correct?
MS S. BAM: Thank you very much. I would like to congratulate the planners through you for putting me first to speak. I think this is a change of the tradition of the church. But I would also like to remind the committee's planners that we are told that the first human being was in Africa and ...

So, I reached South Africa on the 14th of 1991, December. I could not attend the funeral of the deceased, because I was late due to some arrangements in Uganda, but now as the breadwinner by then, appeared to be the breadwinner, because my brother was the elder one. The arrangement was made ...
MR BELLINGAN: Mr Chairman, these experienced operators in the Security Branch were there because they could work as a team. What was needed then was for people to cover up. Each person would have assumed the role that he needed to in the circumstances, without me going to him and discussing it ...
MR VAN JAARSVELD: Chairperson, it was limited to Hechter and Cronje. The Attorney General never approached me afterwards in connection with anything else. On the contrary, he made a request to me in the past couple of days, Dr Pretorius of the Special Investigation Team asked me to help them with ...
GEN VAN DER MERWE: In the past we had tried this numerous times, it simply wasn't practically viable. Firstly, one could not place a surveillance team in Lesotho, there wasn't even such a possibility. To surveil persons an a full-time basis involved such a complicated process and one would ...
ADV ARENDSE: Mr Chairman this witness' evidence, or his - it was introduced unilaterally by the leader of evidence and by their team. The time it's taken to deal with this witness, with respect, we must be allowed the latitude to do so properly.
Those stories are very enthusiastically investigated at the moment. People are being subpoenaed to give information and part of the final report of the Truth Commission will also be the report on what happened in KwaNdebele. So you can tell your people that although we are not there to report ...
MR LOOTS: Right at the beginning, when Capt Hechter and Paul van Vuuren started with this operation for which they have applied for amnesty, I was not in the office at that stage, or I was not in the capacity of the Commander of the Black Power, I was part of a Special Investigative Team in the ...
