A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR MALAN: Now let me just ask you, at that time would the soccer team have members of the Amabuvo and the ANC in the same team? Would they play soccer together?
MR THULARE: Earlier in your evidence it was put to you that you had instructed at the preparatory meeting or meetings before the bombings that if uniformed police, if anyone obstructed the team that was going to damage these buildings they should be killed and you said that you didn't mean it in ...
ADV GCABASHE: Thank you Chair. Mr Zakwe, a couple of questions, just clarify for me. You know the first meeting that you had with the comrades, they came to complain to you about the actions of Skosana, you then said to us that you said to them that they should come back to you the following day, ...
MR SIBANYONI: Now on the night of the operation, did you also return together with the team just through the border, not at the border post?
MR MAHARAJ: I was part of the team in the hand-picking.
During his detention Walus was at first not prepared to give any statements to the police. After prolonged interrogation and due to the fact that he was given alcohol by the police, he started co-operating with them. He was also misled into believing that some members of the interrogation team ...
During 1990 the Applicant received a cache of arms from his commander Eugene de Kock together with a number of his colleagues.  They were told to conceal the arms for possible further use in the event of future Nuremberg trials.  He transported the arms to his house but after his arrest in ...
MR CLOETE: I would have been interested but like I said, Capt Opperman spoke to the team leader about what had happened and they thought they shot Victor Ntuli.
MR HATTINGH: You also made a statement to the Attorney-General and his investigating team, is that correct?
MR SONTI: It is rare that as a member of the Kaizer Chiefs my child would favour another team. I don’t know how he was killed as I was not there.
MR MBANDAZAYA: And you were playing rugby in Butterworth, is not that so, a team there in Butterworth, you were playing local team? I still remember you.
MS PATEL: Part of the tasks then that you would have assigned to the Investigative Team in Cradock, would also then have been who assisted the person who has applied for asylum, not so?
MR CORNELIUS: Yes. But I think that clears the situation up. This is purely I understand from my instructions, after the Attorney-General's Special Investigations Team, alleged that he was kidnapped, that this application was drawn by my client. I will leave it at that for what it is worth, Mr ...
MR SIBANYONI: The impression I’ve got when I read the applicants is that they surprised the occupants of the house. But when one reads the report apparently coming from Lawrence, is that he was working in conjunction with the team. How did you understand the operation? How was it conducted?
During September 1996 Loots was contacted by Van Vuuren who told him that it was alleged by the Attorney-General's investigating team that Motasi was killed because he had instituted a civil claim against the Minister of police. He never before this had heard of such a civil claim. He does not ...
MR BRACHER: But you asking other people to go out and plant bombs, wouldn't you expect the leadership to say: "We have already had a success. You are one of a great team here"?
ADV GCABASHE: Within your Section, Mandela Section, how many members were there in your team, in the SDU that you controlled?
MR KENDALL: Much talk was heard of this. I was for example at Vlaklaagte where there was a shooting incident, where Mbukoto - or the information that was given to me, that it was a number of men who broke up a youth gathering and the shooting took place and some of the youths were killed, but I ...
upstairs on the 10th floor, I think it was. They had teams of interrogators. Of course there no rest in-between. They kept that up because as one team went off the other team arrived. Perhaps they would allow you perhaps an hour or two to go back to the cell, and then the new team would be ...
scholars and all of us became tighter, closer and in a very short time, we as a team found that we were held in very high esteem in this town of Queenstown.
