A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

DR RAMASHALA: Chairperson may I ask Mr Meyer and his team that as you prepare that submission you consider the following comment from the communities, particularly the greater Black communities and I want to quote
MR VAN DER MERWE: Yes Mr Chairperson, thank you very much. I have been brought up to speed by the Evidence Leader. I have spoken to the legal team also representing the families and the victims. I've also had an opportunity to speak to the legal team representing the applicants. I have ...
CHAIRPERSON: And I think also the point that you raised earlier which one would have to consider, you know, about you saying that these repossession units were specialised units and if there was a shortage they would draw on the task team who were also trained people. It's probably to avoid the ...
MR KOTZE: My recollection of the surveillance is that I remained on the ground floor and since we were a very small team, I never moved very far from the, if I remember correctly, the set of glass doors on the eastern side of the building. We left it to Mr de Kock to go in deeper and survey the ...
ADV BOSMAN: Were you present at the meeting on the 3rd of January where the decision was taken that the members of the team and the supporters of the team should be attacked when you came across them?
Mr Bleki if there is nothing further then I just want to return to certain aspects. You already lodged your application for amnesty in 1996 and the hearing of your application for amnesty was set down for August 1997, that was last year. But because of certain difficulties with the investigation ...
The whole operation was well planned. Its success was a result of a well orchestrated team effort by each of the participants.
I’d like to thank the members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission staff who have preparing here, the statements takers who have been here in advance, for all the team under our logistics officer, Gail van Breda, I am not sure she is in the hall at the moment and all the team that have worked ...
CHAIRMAN: Mr Mpshe apart from just the members of the Committee who are prepared to listen we may be inconveniencing others who are in the support team that runs this meeting, and I think it is now 4:30. It is beyond our normal time, and I think if it not going to be too inconvenient we should ...
MR MALAN: So in your mind you have no doubt that was a collating between Imbokhoto and the KwaNdebele police? Collusion, they were one and the same team? You have no doubt in your mind about that?
The people who were assembled there were referred to as a team and amongst them were those who were called the PAC team, you have the ANC team because they were specialists in torturing and in dealing with members of the different organizations, particularly members of the PAC as it was facing us ...
MR VALLY: It was given to you, I believe, not to you Gen Neethling, but to your legal team.
MR B WILLIAMS: In your own opinion, Mr Mbelo, and judging by the instruction that had been given to you and in view of the fact that most of the deceased in this matter have serious injuries to their heads, would you agree that the inference is almost inescapable that they were meant to be killed? ...
INSP. DE LA REY: Chairperson, the investigation team was consisting of myself, members of the Murder and Robbery Unit in Bloemfontein as well as members of Murder and Robbery Unit in Welkom.
MR VISSER: Were you one of the members of that team?
MR KOK: At that unit there were only four persons who worked in that unit and we usually worked in a team together, because everybody had a certain function to perform, so in that instance I would accept that it would only be the four of us. If ...(intervention)
MR ALBERTS: And at the end of that month, which would be the beginning of December 1996, you were busy with your legal team in preparation of your application.
CHAIRPERSON: You see I speak for myself. I find it strange that the PAC would arrange for this operation to take place and not to equip all its members of that team with arms so that they can successfully complete that operation. Have you got any comment about that?
MS PATEL: But they were invited to this party, not so as part of the membership to the soccer team that Mr Magubane was in charge of?
MR ROSSOUW: The question whether it was an unlawful operation and the previous question as to whether it was just a small identified elite team who by themselves undertook to execute unlawful activities because they believed it would combat the liberation struggle. In the light of that, would you ...
