Was beaten to death by community residents in the Tshino village of Venda on 2 February 1990, in attacks on people accused of practising witchcraft to hinder the work of political activists in the area. Mr Maphaha was one of two people killed that day. Two perpetrators were granted amnesty (AC/2000/094).
