Was severely tortured when he was detained for 18 months in Louis Trichardt, Transvaal, on 16 May 1985. Members of the SAP put wet socks over his head, sjambokked him, left him naked and pulled his genitals. He was leading a youth mass meeting when arrested and the Security Branch believed that he had undergone clandestine military training in a neighbouring country.
