He escaped physical injury on 30 April 1991 when the car in which he and five other people were travelling was attacked by ANC self-defence unit (SDU) members at Magabheni, Umgababa, KwaZulu, near Durban. Two of the vehicle occupants were killed and two injured. One SDU member was granted amnesty (AC/1998/066).
