A former acting Deputy President of the Transvaal ANC and a member of MK who was shot dead in the Transvaal on 14 August 1978 by an ANC unit acting on instructions. It was believed in ANC leadership circles that Mr Mthembu had agreed to give evidence for the State in a forthcoming political trial.
