A member of MK who was briefly detained in 1980 for indiscipline and severely ill-treated. In 1984, he was detained following the Viana mutiny and held for four years during which he was severely tortured. (See ANC camps) Mr Mthembu`s difficulties in the ANC began after his father, acting Deputy-President of the Transvaal ANC in 1958, was shot dead in an ANC operation in April 1978 to prevent him from giving evidence in a political trial.
