She lost her house and all her belongings in an arson attack during intensifying conflict between UDF and Inkatha supporters in Trust Feeds, New Hanover, near Pietermaritzburg, on 3 December 1988. The previous day, police had withdrawn their presence from the area in preparation for the Trust Feeds massacre, which took place on 3 December. At the time of the attack, there was no policing presence in the area, leaving UDF-supporting families particularly vulnerable to attack.
