Was severely beaten by SAP members in Hermanus, Cape, in June 1960 while leading an anti-pass march to the police station. He was arrested and severely beaten while awaiting trial. In October 1960, he was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, after which he was banned from Hermanus.
