She fled her home in KwaNdengezi, Kwazulu, near Pinetown, Natal, when it was raided and vandalised by ANC supporters in factional conflict in December 1992 arising from a split in the local ANC branch. Her brother, an ANC supporter, was severely injured in the attack.
