An ANC supporter and member of a self-defence unit (SDU) who was shot dead by fellow SDU members at Esigcakeni, Richmond, Natal, on 9 October 1993, shortly after he and a friend had been fetched from their homes on the instructions of the local ANC leader, Mr Sifiso Nkabinde. On the previous day, Mr Phungula had lent his friend a firearm given to him by Mr Nkabinde for SDU purposes, and the friend had used the gun to kill an unidentified person. His friend was also shot dead.
