He died at Sqamaans, Transvaal , on 4 July 1991 while being tort u red during interrogation by members of the Eastern Transvaal Security Branch, who suspected him of being an ANC supporter. His body was later completely destroyed by Vlakplaas operatives using explosives at the Verdacht weapons range. Four Vlakplaas operatives, including the commander, were granted amnesty for the killing (AC/2001/141).
