She fell and broke her ribs trying to escape an attack by IFP supporters in 1990 at the Merafe hostel, Soweto, Johannesburg, following the announcement by the IFP that it was to become a political party. This decision resulted in an extensive recruitment campaign in hostels. Hostel-dwellers who refused to join the IFP were targeted.
