Was arrested in Murraysburg, Cape on 18 May 1986, and then detained for over four months under emergency regulations after protests in the area. During his detention at the Murraysburg police station and St Alban’s prison in Port Elizabeth, he was severely beaten and tear-gassed by prison warders. See police brutality.
