A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

That was our Special Report for this week. Our team is also in Pietermaritzburg for the Human Rights Committee hearings. And we will have two special dispatches from KwaZulu-Natal in next week’s programme. We will also be in East London this coming week where the Amnesty Committee has hearings. ...
A man approached us raising his arms and he was talking in Xhosa saying that he’ll take us to where the rest of the group is. One sergeant from the riot unit, he was a white sergeant, said I should shoot this man. And before I shot this man, as he was raising his arms I saw his firearm, and ...
Appearing before the Truth Commission can sometimes be a dangerous act. It has happened several times that a potential witness refused to testify out of fear for appraisal from those who are going to be implicated. For this reason the Truth Commission has appointed a specialist witness protection ...
Late last year the Truth Commission started a reconciliation register, an opportunity for all South Africans to sign a book with their commitment to reconciliation. The Special Report team this week went to the Gauteng offices of the Truth Commission to sign their names in the register.
It was one of the strategies to suppress the UDF beliefs. The regime was at war with the black people and they knew which areas were very vigilant and the only way they could actually try and cut down on numbers was to kill, destroy those townships. And that is why the A-Team had to be helped all ...
Early this morning Dirk Coetzee was fetched by the witness protection team to be taken to his amnesty hearing. He’s one of about a 100 people who have been protected since the Commission started. Another was Phumzile Priscilla Ntimbane. // As the Truth Commission have started in Tembisa I got a ...

Winnie Mandela, president of the ANC Women’s League in the new South Africa. One of the most famous women in the world. This film sheds new light on Winnie and her personal team of bodyguards, known as the Mandela United Football Club.
The National Party made its submission and the former state president made his submission. He said actions of an unlawful nature were never authorized, they were either bona fide misinterpretations of lawful instructions or they were bona fide actions as a result of people who were overzealous or ...
For us as a team it symbolized committing ourselves to reconciliation, the fact that we’ve come in, the fact that we work with the TRC on a frequent basis, we are also committed to reconciling South Africa as a whole. But what’s the symbol behind it from the TRC’s perspective? // Well for us ...
We’ve come to the end of our programme. The Truth Commission is facing a crisis of credibility right now. The generals of the former police force seem to have a defined attitude, while the National Defence Force also appears rather reluctant to cooperate. The military submission that was supposed ...
In tonight’s programme we bring you a report on Steven Biko the man and the testimony of those who caused his death. We also analyse the three months in the late 1980s which will haunt Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for the rest of her life. This week the world was told that it was Winnie ...
Perhaps this kind of confession, forgiveness and reconciliation are as important in our country as the truth commission process. There will be no Truth Commission hearing this coming week. The commissioners and their staff are taking a rest and having a ‘bosberaad’ at the same time to take ...
The Commission also pressed the policemen on their apparent lack of thoroughness in all investigations relating to Madikizela-Mandela. // Could you tell me why further efforts weren’t taken to perhaps try and locate more witnesses or other evidence to corroborate the information that you had ...
We’ve all heard of the dramatic stories of Dirk Coetzee and Eugene de Kock’s hit squad at Vlakplaas and the shady army unit, the CCB. And there is an impression that these formed the heart of the apartheid government’s violent strategy of torture and murder against pro-democracy activists. ...
1995. South Africa reaches out emotionally to the concept of a rainbow nation. This moment is imprinted on our psyche as a time when one nation became a possibility, but today we have to ask is the rainbow nation a mirage? Did it exist? Can it exist? And if it does, is it over?
Perhaps mister Botha’s former cabinet colleagues should take his advice seriously to cooperate with the Truth Commission. More than one of them have been implicated directly in gross human rights violations and there are only 20 days left before the deadline for applications for amnesty. After 14 ...
Our team will be in Port Elizabeth this coming week to attend the amnesty hearings of the policemen in whose custody Steve Biko died. Sunday will be our last programme for 1997, so please don’t miss it. Goodnight.
