A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR WILLEMSE: The question is that I should briefly explain what my career was with SAA. I was asked to transfer to SAA during 1979. At that stage I was a member of the legal advisors team and was known then as the South African Railways and Harbours and I fulfilled a very specific role there. I ...
MR BERGER: You talk about catching a flight to Frankfurt. On arrival at Frankfurt I saw the rest of the team. We all managed to get on the same flight to South Africa.
MR KRUSER: That's what I thought happened at that stage when I did the statement. This statement was done at the time of preparation for the inquest and I was advised by my legal team that this statement is sufficient for me to apply for amnesty and I subsequently did so.
ADV BOOYENS: I then asked Captain van Zyl to compile a team and to plan how we were going to go over to the action of elimination. I believe that we also discussed this, that the perception had to be created that they had left the country and I can remember that we arranged that the vehicle was to ...

Then we will call Strydom - I'm sorry - then we will call Gen Wandrag, who was the commanding officer of the Task Force to tell you what he knows about it and the instructions he gave to the next witness, which will be Gen Strydom, who was the Commander of the Task Team and at that stage we'll go ...
DR RANDERA: General, just one last question, and this, it relates to this issue of the only person who had knowledge of what was going on within the front companies was Dr Basson. Now during this hearing we've had very eminent scientists coming and speaking, the very people who were actually - Dr ...

After four and a half months I returned to my station, Springs, where I was in control of a unit aimed at the arrest of Black people who had committed passbook contraventions. My team and I, consisting of about 14 Black police officers, regularly performed raids. (Inaudible) contraventions. ...
CHAIRPERSON: Now Mr Ras testified here yesterday and I attempted to determine the same thing from him and he says that he decided when you were already at the house and that man came out, he decided "we need another plan", and then I asked him whether or not he discussed this with Mr de Kock ...
MR RAUTENBACH: You testified, and I'll use your statement, you indicated - I'm just looking for the correct paragraph, you refer to the team spirit between the government and the security branch and the so-called blind loyalty between the security branch and the government. As far as that is ...
MR POLLOCK: No, they used to call us the A Team.
I then deal with the question of the decorations and I state that Major Williamson, his immediate superior office Brigadier Goosen and the remaining members of their team which took part in the bomb blast at the London offices of the ANC, all received decorations for the role which each of them ...
MR BELLINGHAN: Mr Chairman, I've been involved in various legal forums in the time since I left the South African Police. In respect of the Amnesty Committee, this is my fourth legal team. I've had changes for various reasons which I don't want to go into over here. It's entirely possible that ...
All I want to know is that on occasions you will alternate driving, in that Mr Dube or Mr Mbane or yourself would drive a motor vehicle on a specific operation. You were not the only driver in that team, is that correct?
